Global Visas has reported this unexpected move, wherein the UK immigration department is facing pressure from the European Union to relax their visa rules, to encourage tourism to the continent.
(PRWEB UK) 17 March 2012
Senior EU Commissioner, Antonio Tajani, said that a much more liberal visa policy would help to attract the new wealthy populations of India, China, Russia and Brazil. Global Visas explain that the calls for visa liberalisation follow similar moves by the US, The US recently made their visa checks for tourists less strict in order to attract visitors from emerging economies.
Speaking to the Independent newspaper, Tajani stated, "We need a more modern visa policy which can attract the growing middle classes in Russia, China, India and Brazil." He asserts that the changes are in its preliminary stage and he is "at the beginning of this work and it's not easy to change the rules, but possible."
Tajani added that it is about time that the EU started to regard the tourism industry as one that is vital for growth. "Tourism has been highly neglected for a long time. We have to amend this and take the advantage of the new found wealth in populated countries. There is a fantastic opportunity to increase the number visiting European nations."
Currently, those from outside the EU must apply for their tourist visa from their local consulate. This visa allows them to move around the Schengen area of the EU for a maximum of three months.
The untapped pool from the coffers of tourism industry has emerged only now. Whether the UK immigration will succumb to the pressure from EU to tap this reserve, is yet to be determined.
